I self taught myself the basics using the internet and tutorials many years ago but never continued with it. However, if it's for work then they are required to train and accredit you to the standard required. So they should be sending you on training course(s) or putting you through day(s) release for college to learn.

Visual Basic is so simple if you are familiar with simple programming principles, like selection, iteration etc. The syntax is easy to get to grips for, I'm sure you wont have much trouble. Like dav said, will be stuff on line could probably find some ebooks.
